Meyer is not writing to tell teens how to feel or act in a relationship. She is not counsel or attorney to marry right out of high school, giving up a college education, got pregnant, and they refuse to abort a life-threatening pregnancy. Frankly I think it is more harmful for people to take these books too seriously. I understand their reasons for doing so (I know it’s just fiction) but I still wonder whether it is right or wrong. Those whose careers are dedicated to saving lives (doctors and nurses) have to deal with these decisions every day.

Perhaps as a society we have been insensitive to think that the sex scenes are “the norm” in the story today, but I felt comfortable with the amount Ms. Meyer included. I think it was handled responsibly and in good taste, so do not bother me. Because of its delicate handling of these issues, I could give my cousin an honest opinion about whether he thought the series was too mature for her teenage daughter to read.

I liked that Ms. Meyer expressed opposing views on each issue. For discussion of the university, Bella does not seem to matter much, Edward pushed for it. For premarital sex, Edward had wanted to hold. To “spin” Bella … Bella and others had their opinions, but Edward and Rosalie had the opposition and the personal reason that would not want this to Bella.

As for your problem with Carlisle making his “family” I think Ms. Meyer did an excellent job of transmitting the distress Carlisle was to be a doctor and wanted to do everything physically possible to save these young lives cut short by tragedy. It would have a difficult choice, I think, since real-life docs and nurses do not have immortality as a saving grace. That said, I think I used judiciously considering the time that has been around and how few people turned in Twilight New Moon Eclipse Breaking Dawn.
